The French have a great respect for the geography of their country which is reflected in the importance of "terroir" for wines,

France was the home of the idea of the geographical region, wherein people were united by common interests - often economic - which derived from the physical geography of the particular area.
This idea grew in the nineteenth century and has been weakened by better communications and greater economic prosperity.
