Aquitaine in south-western France borders the Atlantic and the Pyrenees mountain range on south. It covers an area of 41,309 km², and includes the départements Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It is a major tourist area, a major wine producer (Bordeaux and others) and the only true source of Cognac and Armagnac. Its major town is Bordeaux. Its has a very large British population as a result of early emigration to the Dordogne (towns such as Sarlat). Very many holiday gites are established there, and if you're looking for self catering cottages with swimming pools then this is the place to be. Aquitaine contains the following departements (the chief town of each department - the prefecture) is shown in brackets:-
