The Auvergne includes a large part of the Massif Central, and has the most depopulated Departement of France - Cantal. The winters are cold enough for skiing and the summers sometimes too hot to bear. Most recently life in the Auvergne was made famous by "Avoir and Etre" - a controversial film about the retirement year of a teacher in a small village there. The Parc National des Volcans is here, and spa towns such as Vichy (the capital of unoccupied France in the second world war). The current administrative région is larger than the historical province of Auvergne, and includes provinces and areas that historically were not part of Auvergne. The Auvergne region is made up of the old region of the Auvergne, plus:- The Bourbonnais (département of Allier), Velay, part of Gévaudan (extreme southwest of Haute-Loire), a part of Vivarais (extreme southeast of Haute-Loire) and a small part of Forez (extreme northeast of Haute-Loire). Auvergne contains the following departements (the chief town of each department - the prefecture) is shown in brackets:-
