Dreamed about for a long time, and finally engineered between 1804 and 1842, the Brest to Nantes Canal was seen as a way of beating British blockades of Brest. When the Blavet Canal was added, Lorient, too was similarly protected. Until the building of the dam for Lac Guerledan it ran from Port Launay to Nantes and served to ship heavy goods to and from Central Brittany. Many sections fell into disuse and disrepair, but its touristic value means that many sections (such as the Aulne Valley) are being renovated. The canal consists of the following:-
