Brittany is France's celtic fringe, consisting of four departments at the moment, but Loire Atlantique (Department 44) yearns to join it because it was formerly part of the Breton duchy. It is rich in folklore (King Arthur and Merlin lived here – in the forest of Broceliande), in celtic music (on sale in all the shops) and tradition generally. The white and black flag (the "gwenn and dhu") is much used and Breton is an option in most schools. It is also France's second most popular destination for English tourists, and the coastal resorts such as Carnac can be hell holes in the summer. Holiday gites and cottages abound. There are many British properties here, and more British are still arriving - some of them from Spain which is becoming too hot to be confortable in the summer. The canals, national parks, beaches, Grandes Randonnees are the major attractions, but the music and dancing are absolutely unmissable. Bretagne contains the following departements (the chief town of each department - the prefecture) is shown in brackets:-
