The canal Lateral a la Loire had been mooted several times it was started in 1827. Building the canal was a considerable head-ache because the towns of Nevers, la Charité and Cosne left no room on the right bank of the Loire for a canal so it was on the left bank for most of its length. Completed 1838.

The canal consists of the following:-

Fourchambault to Digoin - 110.82 kms.
Chatillon sur Loire to Conse-Cours sur Loire - 24.61 kms.
Conse-Cours sur Loire to Fourchambault - 48.84 kms.

Total length of the canal is 184.27 kms.
