The Briare canal is one of the oldest in France, started in 1604 and completed 1642. It was to bring food to Paris, and was sufficiently important for the French state to take it over in 1860. It has 33 locks with a dramatic bridge over the Loire at Briare, designed by Eiffel in tubular steel. It connects with the Seine via the Loing river, which is also canalised.
The canal consists of the following:-
- Nemours to the Seine (Loing) - 19.78 kms.
- Briare to Montargis - 55.35 kms.
- Montargis to Nemours (Loing) - 32.07 kms.
Total length of the canal is 107.20 kms.
Be sure to use the satellite option given by Google Maps to view the course of the canal. You will find some deviation between the canal's true course and our map - we wil get round to replotting our map at some time !
