A world heritage site since December 1996, the Canal du Midi is a fantastic engineering feat. It is the seventeenth century creation of Paul Riquet, modified by Vauban. See also the Canal Lateral a la Garonne, to which it is intimately related (together they are called the Canal de deux mers).

Follow this link : A thorough and affectionate account of the canal

The canal consists of the following:-
  • Toulouse to Castenaudary - 56.19 kms.
  • Carcassonne to Narbonne junction - 55.72 kms.
  • Narbonne junction to Agde - 59.05 kms.
  • Narbonne Section - 35.38 kms.
  • Agde to Marseillan - 8.28 kms.
  • Castenaudary to Carcassonne - 36.11 kms.
Total length of the canal is 250.73 kms.

Be sure to use the satellite option given by Google Maps to view the course of the canal. You will find some deviation between the canal's true course and our map - we wil get round to replotting our map at some time !
