The canal was dug between 1784 and 1843 for the supplying of firewood to Paris. Formerly wood the Morvan was transported in big rafts on the Yonne to Paris and the canal was a more economic way of doing things. South of the Morvan, the region called Bazois was for the first time able also to supply firewood to Paris. The canal has 110 locks: 78 on the Yonne and 32 on the side of the Loire. The locks on the southern part still have the original measurements (30.15 meters long and 5.20 meters wide). The canal consists of the following:-
