The main feature of the région Centre is the Loire Valley with its tributaries, the: Cher, Indre, Eure, etc. It is in the Centre région that the famous châteaux of the Loire Valley are found - Chenonceau, Blois, Azay le Rideau, Amboise, Chinon, Angers. The wines are renowned - Saumur, Vouvray, Sancerre - for their light fruitiness, OK in the whites, but the reds are thin. The région Centre is made up of the following former provinces of France: Orléanais Touraine Berry a part of Perche (the rest of being in the Basse Normandie and the Pays-de-la-Loire) The very bland name "Centre" - chosen by the French central government - is criticized by many in France. It is made up of too many historical provinces to use an historical name, but the région Centre is not really at the centre of France, and the name is criticized as being dull and nondescript. It has been proposed to change the name from Centre to "Val de Loire" (i.e. "Valley of the Loire"), which would has more meaning The name is sometimes used next to the name of the région, (eg "Centre - Val de Loire") but is not adopted as the region's official name. Centre contains the following departements (the chief town of each department - the prefecture) is shown in brackets:-
