Franche-Comté (the former "Free County" of Burgundy, as distinct from the neighbouring Duchy) is a région and a traditional province of eastern France. The principal cities are Besançon (the historic capital of the region) Belfort and Montbéliard (Aire Urbaine Belfort-Montbéliard-Héricourt-Delle). Franche-Comté covers an area of 16,202 km² and includes the departments Doubs, Haute-Saône, Jura and Territoire de Belfort. Franche-Comte contains the following departements (the chief town of each department - the prefecture) is shown in brackets:-
