Île-de-France corresponds roughly to the metropolitan area of Paris and covers an area of 12,011 km². It is the most populated région of France, having more inhabitants than Belgium or Sweden, and is roughly central to the Paris Basin (therefore analogous to London). The early architects of the French State were careful to sub divide this area to make opposition by the local inhabitants more difficult to mobilise. Accordingly, Paris itself is covered by several, geographically small, departements. Ile-de-France contains the following departements (the chief town of each department - the prefecture) is shown in brackets:-
