The Canal d’Ille et Rance connects the English Channel to the Atlantic via Rennes. The northern part is based on the Rance River and leads to the southern part based on the Ille River via a flight of eleven locks at Hede, and a huge hand-dug bief de partage (the watershed section).
The canal is part of the strategic plan for waterways in Brittany to avoid English blockades. The Canal d'Ille et Rance was started in 1804 by Napoleon and finished by 1832
The canal consists of the following:-
- Dinan - Hede - 30.65 kms.
- Hede - Rennes - 35.79 kms.
Total length of the canal is 66.45 kms.
Be sure to use the satellite option given by Google Maps to view the course of the canal. You will find some deviation between the canal's true course and our map - we wil get round to replotting our map at some time !
