Limousin is one of the régions of France. It is made up of three French départements: Correze (19), Creuse (23) and Haute-Vienne (87) and covers an area of 16,942 km². The Limousin region is essentially made up of two historical French provinces: Limousin and Marche, but there are four small areas within Limousin which used to belong to Poitou, the Auvergne, etc.. The province of Limousin is the most populated part of the Limousin region. When the Limousin region was created, it was decided to call it Limousin only, despite the fact that it also includes the province of Marche. Limoges, the historical capital and largest city of the province of Limousin, was chosen as the capital of the Limousin region. Creuse is notable for Aubusson where tapestries are still made - there are several factories and an uninspiring museum, which is still worth a visit because of the quality of its tapestries. Creuse furnished Paris with many of its builders - it was possible to walk there for a job and is itslef obversupplied with fine rural building. In the past if you wanted a house you simply dug up granite from some nearby filed and started building. Limousin contains the following departements (the chief town of each department - the prefecture) is shown in brackets:-
