Picardy, well known as the scene of much of the First World War, consists not only of clay lowland (the Somme Valley) but also vast stretches of rolling hills – somewhat like the South Downs – with villages nestling in the valleys. It is impossible to conceive how the battlefront for trench warfare was maintained over this huge area. The climate of the area has changed since 1914, being much drier and for this reason alone WW1 would be unrepeatable. Picardie contains the following departements (the chief town of each department - the prefecture) is shown in brackets:-
