Rhône-Alpes was named after the Rhône River and the Alps mountain range. It is the biggest region of France in size and second biggest in population, and the Rhône-Alpes region is a place very attractive for the traveller which covers an area of 43,698 km² and contains the departments Ain, Ardèche, Drôme, Isère, Loire, Rhône, Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Notable cities are: Lyon , the second biggest French city, Grenoble, big academic centre where the Winter Olympic Games of 1968 took place. Annecy, lovely town with a beautiful lake Chambéry, once the capital of the Dukedom of Savoie Privas, Saint-Etienne, Valence and of course Mont-Blanc.
