The Vilaine river was canalised to connect Rennes to the sea, but there are few locks and the Vilaine was naivigable without them. The river is managed by barrages at Vitry (north east of Rennes) and at Arzal which prevents seawater entering what was the estuary, and what is now a vast reservoir.
The canal consists of the following:-
- Vilaine River Guipry - Rennes - 41.22 kms.
- Vilaine River Redon - Guipry - 38.74 kms.
Total length of the canal is 79.96 kms.
Be sure to use the satellite option given by Google Maps to view the course of the canal. You will find some deviation between the canal's true course and our map - we wil get round to replotting our map at some time !
