Art in Brittany - L'art dans les chapelles

This is the best opportunity we have found of understanding ancient and modern Brittany side by side. L'art dans les chapelles is an art exhibition spread out among 20 or so medieval chapels. The chapels are stunning: some are tiny hermitages, others huge sophisticated buildings in simple countryside.

Terror abounds - carved dragons breath out fire to join up to tie-beams, sablieres (carved wall-plates) contain scenes from hell, and human skulls adorn niches in some of the walls. And then two extra ingredients -
  • - the installations, maybe not comprehensible to ordinary mortals, but vigorous and colourful
  • - the visitors' books - livres d'or, which display the unnerved intellectuality of the French.

This is what L'art dans les chapelles says about itself:-
Every Summer for the last 13 years, L'art dans les chapelles has invited artists (painters, sculptors, and plastic artists) to enter into a dialogue width a patrimony of exceptional richness and diversity - chapels. These chapels date mostly from the 15th and 16th centuries and strech along the Blavet valley, in Morbihan, in the region of Pontivy. Each artist temporarily occupies a chapel.
